How to use the Reinventing Organizations Map

The Reinventing Organizations Map has been created to show that businesses can be run in different ways and to inspire them to move toward creating more human workplaces that are beneficial for both owners and employees.

Our goal is to support companies to become more conscious about the people who work there, their customers and the environment they are working in.

A more human workplace (also often called The future of work) is also beneficial for the organization in many ways:

  • Lower fluctuation
  • Higher engagement and customer focus
  • Faster time to market
  • More time focused on value creation, less time spent in unproductive busyness
  • Quicker and easier resolution of conflicts

Many people work today just to keep their family afloat financially. What if there is more to work than just making money? Work also can be a place where people

  • grow both professionally and personally
  • are engaged and enthusiastic about how they contribute to the world
  • find meaning and purpose

The developmental lines on the map represent some of the factors that organizations need to work on in order to create more human workplaces. The focal point of using the map is to create awareness for these factors, and at the same time assess organizations so they know where they are and what their next step is.

In this article we will show some use cases of how people have been using the map to transform the culture of an organization to be more humane.

Please let us know how you have been using the map.

The Atlas Platform is an online tool that helps you work with the Reinventing Organizations Map. You can learn more about the Atlas Platform in the following articles

Use case 1: Organizational assessment

In some cases, it is worth surveying the organization and working through the results with leadership to help them set organizational development goals.

The steps in a typical assessment process are as follows:

1. Setup

The standard Reinventing Organizations Map works for most businesses, however it is an option to customize the map by removing or adding some developmental lines in order to make it more focused for that client.

The Atlas-Platform helps you in customizing the map.

2. Collecting data

In most cases this is done by in-person interviews. Roughly 10% of the organization is sufficient to gather a useful sample.

The Atlas-Platform can help you in collecting the data

3. Preparing for the leadership workshop

Depending on the client’s needs there are different ways to share the findings:

The Atlas-Platform helps you in visualizing the data.

4. Workshop with leadership

The goal of the workshop is to share the voice of the organization with leadership, inspire them to imagine the company’s highest future possibility and create actionable steps toward that vision.

5. Organizational transformation

In many cases the organization can carry out some of the transformational steps on their own. For example, create and communitcate a transparent salary scale if this was not present and caused issues among the employees.

To achieve other growth objectives, the company might need the help of an external organizational development consultant.

It is important to support the client in achieving both internal and external goals.

6. Measure again to see the result of the changes

In order to maximize learning, it is great to re-assess the organization and measure the success of their effort toward a better workplace. From this, the organization can learn what worked and what did not and can set new goals toward an even brighter future.

The Atlas-Platform can help you in collecting data again.

Use case 2: Team coaching or self-assessment workshop

Team coaches, organization developers or facilitators can work with the map to help teams assess themselves and come up with things they can improve upon.

The process is very similar to the full organizational assessment, however sometimes it is done with customized maps, like the ones below.

You can gather real time feedback on Atlas-Platform to see the combined results immediately and discuss it with the participants.

Use case 3: Individual self-assessment and colleague feedback

The survey in Atlas Platform can be set up with custom questions that allow people to individually self-assess or get feedback from colleagues.

Use case 4: Sales

If you are an organization developer, you can use the map during the sales process to help leaders quickly find what strengths and problems their company has. Also inspire them to think about the organization’s highest future possibility.

USe case 5: Academic researches

Miloslav Čupík: Case Study of organisational evolution in the context of problematic Scrum implementation project at DEVorg.

In this empirical research, I analysed a case study of problematic implementation of Scrum, an IT project management framework, at “DEVorg” – a UK based software development business. Initial issues encountered during the project led me to formulate the following research question: “Why did DEVorg leadership team decide to reject proposed Scrum best practices and what would need to happen to change their mind?”

F. Laloux’s concept describing organizational cultures of so-called turquoise organizations constitutes a very attractive narration; however, it focuses on describing the already existing organizations and isolated events from the beginnings of the creation of turquoise organizations. This article is an attempt to gain an insight into organizations, to show the successive stages of creating evolutionary turquoise organizations at the level of particular organizational processes.
